Three things shaping expat life in the Kingdom right now.
Saudi Arabia's sweeping national transformation programme is reshaping entertainment, tourism, gender norms, and the economy. Cinemas, concerts, sporting events, and mixed-gender workplaces are now commonplace — a radical change from just a decade ago. For expats, daily life is more open and internationally familiar than ever.
Over 10 million expatriates live in Saudi Arabia — roughly 38% of the total population. Large communities of South Asian, Western, Arab, and East Asian expats are well established in Riyadh, Jeddah, and the Eastern Province. You'll find international supermarkets, cultural associations, sports leagues, and active Facebook and WhatsApp communities in every major city.
Most expats settle in one of three cities. Riyadh is the capital and business hub — fast-growing, modern, and landlocked. Jeddah is the cosmopolitan Red Sea gateway, with a more relaxed atmosphere and historic old town. Dammam / Al Khobar anchors the oil-rich Eastern Province with a large Western expat community and easy access to Bahrain.
