Living in Jeddah as an Expat
Saudi Arabia's gateway city on the Red Sea coast. More relaxed, cosmopolitan, and culturally vibrant than the capital — Jeddah has been home to a large international community for centuries.

Jeddah is Saudi Arabia's commercial hub and second-largest city. Its Red Sea location gives it a sea breeze that makes summers slightly more bearable than Riyadh, while its historic trading port heritage makes it culturally more open and internationally minded. The Corniche waterfront is one of the most pleasant urban spaces in the Kingdom.
Jeddah's expat community is spread more evenly across the city than Riyadh's. The north is most popular with Western families, while the central and south areas are more mixed. The Corniche is the spine connecting everything.
The most sought-after expat area in Jeddah. Wide, tree-lined streets, large villas, and proximity to the best international schools. Home to many senior expat families and diplomats. Al Rawdah and Al Hamra blend into each other — both offer spacious housing, good amenities, and relatively easy access to the northern Corniche.
A prestigious central-north neighbourhood close to the King Fahd Corniche. Popular with professional expats who want walkable café culture alongside good-quality apartments and villas. Al Andalus has a thriving restaurant strip and is convenient for commutes to the city centre commercial district.
Jeddah's beachfront luxury area. Five-star hotels, waterfront restaurants, and some of the most expensive residential properties in KSA. Home to the Four Seasons, Hilton, and Waldorf Astoria. Popular with executive-level expats and short-term relocators. The northern Corniche extension runs through here.
A large, predominantly residential area popular with mid-level expats from the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa. More affordable than the northern districts, with excellent local markets (Balad is nearby), good supermarkets, and a range of apartment options. Strong sense of community, particularly among Egyptian and Lebanese expats.
Jeddah's 1,400-year-old historic core. Traditional coral-stone buildings (Rowshan architecture), souqs, and mosques. Not an expat residential area per se, but essential to visit — and some adventurous expats do rent apartments here. The best food market (Al-Bab Sharqi fish market) and old merchant houses are here.
The northern beach resort corridor. Quieter, less urban, more family-friendly. Popular for weekend beach clubs and summer retreats. Some expat families choose to live here year-round and commute south to the city centre. Beach clubs, water sports, and a more relaxed weekend lifestyle are the main draw.
Jeddah has always been Saudi Arabia's most cosmopolitan city — its history as a port and gateway to Mecca for pilgrims means it has absorbed foreign cultures for a thousand years. The social atmosphere is noticeably more relaxed than Riyadh: music in cafés, mixed dining, and a vibrant arts scene have been part of Jeddah life long before Vision 2030.
The Red Sea is a major quality-of-life bonus. Diving and snorkelling sites (Obhur Creek, various reefs) are world-class. Beach clubs operate year-round. The King Fahd Fountain — the world's tallest at 312 metres — is a landmark you'll see from much of the city.
Jeddah has no metro (a BRT system is under development as of 2025). A car is essential. The city's road system is largely grid-based in the newer northern areas but chaotic in the older central districts. Traffic peaks 7–9am and 3–7pm. The Corniche road is beautifully maintained and popular for cycling early mornings.
Uber and Careem work well in Jeddah. King Abdulaziz International Airport is one of Saudi Arabia's main international hubs with flights to 100+ destinations.
