The Eastern Province's three main cities function as a single metropolitan area connected by a 30-minute highway drive. Each has a distinct character, and most expats base themselves in Al-Khobar while working in Dhahran or Dammam.
The official capital of Eastern Province. Home to the main government offices, King Fahd Causeway entry point to Bahrain, and the regional port. Less expat-residential than Al-Khobar but growing fast. Good selection of shopping malls, a new Corniche, and improving amenities. More affordable housing than its neighbours.
The preferred residential area for expats in the Eastern Province. Al-Khobar has the best selection of Western restaurants, international schools, beach clubs, and expat compounds. Closest city to the King Fahd Causeway and most conveniently located for the Aramco/SABIC corridor. The Corniche promenade is popular for evening walks.
Home to Saudi Aramco's global headquarters and the King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals. The Aramco compound in Dhahran is a self-contained American-style community with its own schools, hospital, recreational facilities, and housing. If you work for Aramco, you'll likely live here in the compound. King Abdulaziz Air Base is also in Dhahran.
One of the biggest quality-of-life advantages for Eastern Province expats is the King Fahd Causeway connecting Saudi Arabia to Bahrain in under 30 minutes. Bahrain operates under different social rules — licensed restaurants and bars, cinemas, and a more open entertainment environment.
Many Eastern Province expats (especially Western families) make regular weekend trips to Bahrain for dining, shopping, or simply a change of scene. The drive across the causeway is SAR 20 one-way and usually takes 30–45 minutes including border crossing.
If you're joining Saudi Aramco, living in the Dhahran compound is a very different experience from the rest of Saudi Arabia. The compound functions like a small American town — houses with gardens, children cycling freely, a community swimming pool and recreation centre, a bowling alley, and international schools that feed into US college admissions.
Alcohol is not permitted in Saudi Arabia including in the compound, but otherwise social norms are much more relaxed. Dress codes for women in the compound itself are informal. It's a very comfortable, if somewhat insular, lifestyle.
The heart of expat Al-Khobar. Good selection of apartments and villas, close to the Corniche, walkable to restaurants and supermarkets. Most convenient for daily life.
Quieter, more residential. Popular with families. Good access to international schools and the Dammam-Khobar highway for work commutes to Dhahran or Dammam.
Several compounds operate in the Al-Khobar/Dammam area. Al-Khobar Compound (SECO), Arabian Homes, and others. Smaller and less amenity-rich than Riyadh compounds but offer community, security, and a pool.
US curriculum, exclusive to Aramco employees and their families. Considered one of the best schools in the region. Fees covered for Aramco staff families.
American curriculum. Open to all expats. One of the most accessible international schools in the region for non-Aramco families. Annual fees: SAR 50,000–80,000.
IB curriculum, bilingual Arabic/English. Popular with Arab expats and Saudi families wanting international qualifications. Annual fees: SAR 40,000–65,000.
MISA licensing, Royal Commission Jubail registration, IKTVA database enrollment, GOSI setup, and Aramco/SABIC vendor qualification — each step has interdependent sequencing and Arabic-language portal requirements. A single filing error resets your timeline. We manage the architecture so you can focus on the contract.
